Love taking my camera to the boy's football games. Not sure who this kid is but I think it pretty much sums up the day for him.

Another day - another chance to practice my bike roulette skills - total failure today and from failure we learn new things - reminded Tom at 7:29 that it was time to sign up - at 7:30 he proudly indicated he had a bike - at 7:32 I was still unable to get into the bike reservation process - by 7:35 I am logging out and logging back in (much to the heckling and laughter from Tom) - by 7:37 I have secured Bike 35 (where the heck is bike 35....) - Good thing we have moved to Zone Defense in this house and my dear husband has learned how to level up in this game and secured "my bike"!! I knew he was awesome but this just proved it - oh...and I have more work to do on my bike roulette skills - - - - - from failure we learn to practice, practice, practice ....

Love this quote from an interview with Mike Rowe (from Dirty Jobs) ".....And most of all, stop worrying about your happiness. Happiness does not come from a job. It comes from knowing what you truly value, and behaving in a way that's consistent with those beliefs."

Cracks

There is a crack, a crack in everything.

That's how light gets in.

Leonard Cohen "Anthem"

Heroes

Real-life heroes walk among us.

Do Not Let Your Fire Go Out

“Do not let your fire go out, spark by irreplaceable spark, in the hopeless swamps of the approximate, the not-quite, the not-yet, the not-at-all. Do not let the hero in your soul perish, in lonely frustration for the life you deserved, but have never been able to reach. Check your road and the nature of your battle. The world you desired can be won, it exists, it is real, it is possible, it’s yours." -Ayn Rand

Good in the World

FRODO: I can’t do this, Sam.

SAM: I know. It’s all wrong. By rights we shouldn’t even be here. But we are. It’s like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were. And sometimes you didn’t want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy. How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened.
But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something. Even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back only they didn’t. Because they were holding on to something.
FRODO: What are we holding on to, Sam?
SAM: That there’s some good in this world, Mr. Frodo. And it’s worth fighting for.

The Rider

Meyrueis, Lozense, June 26, 1977. Hot and overcast. I take my gear out of the car and put my bike together. Tourists and locals are watching from sidewalk cafes. Non-racers. The emptiness of those lives shocks me.
