Jacksonville Beach

We all had a great time hanging out at Gerry and Lois's cool condo on the beach. Conner and Parker could have spent a month on the beach doing stuff. Thanks to Lois, Conner is now a foremost expert on sea shells from Florida. It was pretty amazing to see the quantity, quality, and variety of shells that would wash up every morning. Conner loved to drag Lois out every day to wander the beach.

Parker, on the other hand, loved to dig and play in the sand. We bought $5.00 worth of gear at the local Target store and make good use of the tools.

Now if the water was a little warmer, it would have been a lot more fun. Guess we'll have to come back in the summer!

Cracks

There is a crack, a crack in everything.

That's how light gets in.

Leonard Cohen "Anthem"

Heroes

Real-life heroes walk among us.

Do Not Let Your Fire Go Out

“Do not let your fire go out, spark by irreplaceable spark, in the hopeless swamps of the approximate, the not-quite, the not-yet, the not-at-all. Do not let the hero in your soul perish, in lonely frustration for the life you deserved, but have never been able to reach. Check your road and the nature of your battle. The world you desired can be won, it exists, it is real, it is possible, it’s yours." -Ayn Rand

Good in the World

FRODO: I can’t do this, Sam.

SAM: I know. It’s all wrong. By rights we shouldn’t even be here. But we are. It’s like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were. And sometimes you didn’t want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy. How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened.
But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something. Even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back only they didn’t. Because they were holding on to something.
FRODO: What are we holding on to, Sam?
SAM: That there’s some good in this world, Mr. Frodo. And it’s worth fighting for.

The Rider

Meyrueis, Lozense, June 26, 1977. Hot and overcast. I take my gear out of the car and put my bike together. Tourists and locals are watching from sidewalk cafes. Non-racers. The emptiness of those lives shocks me.
